Sawara Cypress Handai Sushi Bowl with Lid

Crafted from fine Sawara Cypress, this is a traditional handai (sushi bowl) for mixing sushi rice that you can serve right out of at the table. You can also decorate the sushi with toppings to create chirashi sushi (sushi rice with scattered toppings) for a beautiful presentation.

Handai, sometimes also known as hangiri, is a large wooden, flat-bottomed rice bowl that is used in preparing sushi rice. This wooden sushi rice bowl is made from high quality sawara cypress for a smooth, beautiful finish. Designed with a wide mixing base area, this handai wooden sushi rice bowl helps rice cool quickly and is ideal for evenly mixing sushi rice. The wood also helps to naturally absorb any excess moisture from cooked rice, keeping the texture of rice perfectly balanced.

This handai also comes with a traditional lid. Beyond serving sushi, it’s also great for serving other dishes such as salad, cold noodles, tofu (in ice water) at the table. The lid is also ideal for bringing to pot lucks or picnics.

Usage and Care

Hand wash ONLY (not dishwasher safe) along the grain of the wood with water and a soft sponge
Dry in shaded area before storing (rapid heat due to dish dryer or direct sunlight etc. will cause deformation)
Because it is made of cypress, there may be some residual residue (this is hygienic and contains antimicrobial components). If you are concerned, you may wipe it off with vinegar diluted in hot water,
Avoid soaking in water
Avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight; product may discolor and/or warp
Avoid using near exposed flame or electric stoves; items are flammable
Please be aware that as the wood is very soft there may be indentations or scratches that are a result of the transit from Japan. They do not affect the functionality or appeal of these products.
